July brings sunshine, backyard gatherings, road trips, fireworks, and one of the coolest celebrations of the summer: National Ice Cream Month!
There is something magical about ice cream. It can turn an ordinary afternoon into a memory, bring families together around the kitchen table, and offer a little scoop of happiness on even the hottest summer day.
How Did National Ice Cream Month Begin?
National Ice Cream Month was officially recognized in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan declared July as a month to celebrate ice cream and encouraged Americans to enjoy this beloved dessert.
The celebration was created to recognize ice cream as a fun food enjoyed by people of all ages. Since then, July has become the perfect excuse to grab a cone, fill a bowl, or explore new and creative flavors.
Why Do We Love Ice Cream So Much?
Ice cream is more than just a dessert. It is tied to some of our favorite moments:
🍦 Summer vacations – A stop at a local ice cream shop is almost a vacation tradition.
🍦 Family memories – Ice cream socials, birthday parties, and after-dinner treats create moments we remember for years.
🍦 Small celebrations – Sometimes you do not need a reason. A scoop of your favorite flavor is reason enough.
From classic vanilla and chocolate to adventurous flavors like salted caramel, cookie dough, and fruity sorbets, there is a flavor waiting for everyone.

Host an Ice Cream Social
Invite friends, family, or neighbors over for an ice cream bar. Set out different flavors, toppings, sprinkles, fruit, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream. Let everyone create their own masterpiece.
Try a New Flavor
Step away from your usual favorite and try something new. You might discover your next obsession hiding behind a colorful freezer door.
Visit a Local Ice Cream Shop
Small ice cream businesses are often part of what makes a community special. Supporting local shops helps keep those sweet traditions alive.
Make Homemade Ice Cream
Making ice cream at home is a fun summer activity. Whether you use an ice cream maker or try a no-churn recipe, homemade treats always come with extra memories.
This is the one we have right now, but I’m thinking of upgrading. 🙂 It’s good but it takes a bit of time. If you get it make sure you chill all the ingredients and the bucket at least a couple of hours first. Our go to recipe is 2 cans sweetened condesened milk and a 2 liter bottle of soda. If you use something like Fanta Pineapple or Strawberry you can add some fruit at the end and it’s real yummy.
The Sweet Side of Summer
National Ice Cream Month reminds us to slow down and enjoy the simple things. A dripping cone on a warm July evening, a bowl shared with someone special, or a spontaneous ice cream run can become the moments we treasure.
So this July, celebrate with your favorite flavor, add a few extra sprinkles, and enjoy every delicious bite. After all, summer only comes around once a year, and it deserves a scoop of happiness. 🍨
